What Game of Thrones and autistic children have in common.

Most of us have seen ‘Game of Thrones’ to some extent. As you may know the new series started last night and it’s good to see the show’s not lost any of its grit.
When I first started watching GOT, what struck me was how quickly the main characters got killed off…

Literally no one is safe!

I was left open mouthed when Ned Stark got beheaded……I did not see that coming at all!  It was extremely strange initially, to watch a series where your favourite characters stand no real chance of surviving for any real length of time…..It’s more a case of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’.

But what’s all this GOT talk got to do with autistic children?….

Well, many parents and carers worry about their children taking the big jump into junior or secondary school…

But it doesn’t matter what you do or how much you worry, you can’t delay it…

It’s a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’…

And it’s up to you to make sure that your child is prepared when they take the big jump into junior or secondary school…

Prepared emotionally…

Academically…

And socially.

That’s a pretty heavy load to carry, right?

Well it may feel like a daunting task but there are lots of small and pretty easy things you could be doing to help your child, for example…

Driving or walking the route to their new school to get them used to / familiar with the journey.

Organising play dates to give your child exposure to new social situations and help them work on their social skills…

Preparing a social story with pictures of their new school school/ classroom to read with your child…

Downloading the school curriculum and gently touching on a few topics with your child to give them a little head start.

Now these are just a few things you could be doing to help your child’s transition go a little smoother….

If you want to hear more tips on how to help get the very best from your autistic child, my new paperback book “A Guide To Unlimited Autism Success” could be just what you need….
