The one thing you have to know

get-motivated-stay-motivated-1

Years ago I worked for an agency providing cover work for special schools and ASD units. It was pretty stressful for someone who likes to be organised like me.

I basically got up and got ready for work every morning with no clue where I’d work or who I’d be working with.

I’d get a call around 7:45am telling me where I needed to be and a VERY brief description of what I’d be doing.

Along with the stress of my unpredictable work schedule there was another huge issue I had with this type of work…I never had the time to get to know the child.

By around 1/2pm I was just figuring out “what made them tick”…What they found difficult…What their sensory needs were…And their social ability was.

Then at 3/3:15 they were going home!

I never had enough time with a child to really make a difference….And that was what I hated most of all.

Because…. If you don’t have that clear understanding of what your child can or can’t do, it’s unlikely you’ll be able to help them progress.

One huge thing you HAVE to know when working with and raising a child with autism is…

What they’re motivated by.

Because many children with autism will not see the point in doing something simple like “standing in a line at lunchtime” or “dressing themselves in the morning” so they simply…

Won’t do it!

But this does not necessarily mean they don’t have that skill. It just means that you haven’t made the task motivating enough.

So… make it reinforcing!

For example…If your child loves the alphabet, sing it to them as they stand appropriately by the front door.

Or…If your child enjoys drawing, set up crayons and paper at your table, bring their clothes downstairs and tell them once they’re dressed they can draw.

Motivation is key.

Think about it…

We all need to be motivated to do something right?

Earning Money motivates people to work.

Wanting to be in shape motivates people to exercise.

Wanting a healthy relationship motivates people to communicate.

And as I always say…Children with autism are no different!

While you’re here…

In January I’m launching an exciting new programme for parents and carers with autistic children.

This programme is for parents and carers who want my 1 on 1 support and guidance to help their child thrive in every area of their development.
