Seeing your child happy…

When you decided to have children I’m sure like everyone, you imagined how they might be when they grow up….

Where they might work…

What type of relationship they’ll be in ect….

But something that nearly all parents say about their child is….

“I just want them to be happy.”

Now, most children with ASD engage in stimming behaviours and/or have activities or rituals they enjoy doing again and again…

For example, one boy I used to work with loved to repeat phrases from Disney and Pixar movies over and over.

Another child I worked with loved spinning the wheels on a toy vehicle and watch them go round and round.

And I’ll never forget the little boy who just loved to recite the names of all the train stations he knew again and again.

Your child may do something like this too…

And when children with autism engage in their stim, activity or ritual, they often look and feel very very happy.

And this is something you need to be cautious of…

Because think about it…

If you “just want to see your child happy” it can be easy to fall into the trap of giving in to your child and allowing them to have or engage in their stim, activity or ritual all of the time.

There’s a drama on BBC at the moment about a family with a newly diagnosed boy on the spectrum, it’s called “The A Word” you may be watching it…

Well, there’s a scene where a doctor is explaining autism to the boy’s parents…

She tells them… “His constant singing is a way of protecting himself and keeping him shut out and away from the things he finds difficult, like communication and emotions.”

This got me thinking…

It’s likely that the first time you try taking away your child’s activity or blocking / distracting them from their stim or ritual that it will be very challenging for you…

You’re likely to see lots of behaviour from your child…

Possibly a tantrum…

Maybe even a meltdown.

And it’s because of this that a lot of parents don’t try, or worse still, don’t follow through.

Because….. you guessed it…

“They just want to see their child happy.”
