“Ohh but he’s so social, is he definitely autistic?”

“Ohh but he’s so social, is he definitely autistic?”

Yes, I actually heard this rubbish come out of a learning support assistants mouth this week.

Thankfully this member of staff didn’t work with said child.

Call me harsh but it really gets on my nerves when people say crap like this.

Because that’s exactly what it is… crap!

A myth. One of the many myths people say (and feel the need to share) about children on the spectrum.

Trust me I’ve heard them all…

“So he must hate loud noises.”

“She can’t really make any friends.”

“He can’t cope with any change in routine?”

and the worst of all…

“She can’t speak.”

I hate it when people use that word with autistic children.

“can’t”

** Shudder **

You may have heard acquaintances, teachers, doctors, family members even friends say rubbish like this about your child…

And if you have please remember, that is all they really are… myths.

(crap, rubbish, BS, whatever you want to call it)

Usually people say stuff like this because they’re uneducated, naive and or insensitive. They’ve heard about the textbook stereotype and they believe all ASD children are this way.

I once worked with a family who were told their newly diagnosed child was “Low functioning” and would struggle tremendously with sensory and social situations for his whole life.

After 4 years of intensive therapy he now “functions” well in a mainstream school and has regular play dates where he copes tremendously.

I’m telling you this just so you know myths are myths, opinions are opinions and hard work always pays off.

Keep on going, you’re doing great.
