Going the extra mile for your child

One of the children I work with has got a new 1:1 support assistant at his school this year. Josh’s previous and fantastic 1:1 has moved on and left so they needed a replacement.

Now like I said, Josh’s previous 1:1 was fantastic, she learnt all there was to know about Josh and his unique needs, she always kept and open mind about the techniques we used and above all she was super patient. One of a kind you might say.

So as you can imagine, Josh’s parents want to get the best possible replacement who can carry on where she left off. And when that someone was offered the position, straight away Josh’s parents organised a 2-day training course on autism for her to attend to.

They wanted to give both her and Josh the best possible start to the new school year.

I thought it was pretty great how much the prioritise their son’s needs and how committed they are to Josh getting the best possible help he can at school.

It’s families that go the extra mile like this that see the most progress with their children.

So, how can you go the extra mile for your child?

Is there a certain skill you could work on before or after school to help your child?

Could you focus half an hour a day working on their reading or maths skills so they have an extra boost?

Perhaps you could dedicate your time to working on building their self confidence?

Or maybe you could keep them active on the weekends and help develop their gross motor skills?
