Chasing Two Rabbits At Once…

Have you ever heard the saying…

“If you chase two rabbits at once, you will catch neither”?

Well it’s based on the principle that if you try and do two things at the
same time, you will not succeed in doing either of them…

Of course this isn’t 100% true with EVERYTHING…

There are plenty of things that you can do whist doing something else….

I’m sure if you’re a busy mum you can relate… And packing your child’s
lunchbox whilst eating your morning toast is just regular everyday multi
tasking for you!

But I’ve found this to be at true when it comes to teaching new language
concepts to children with autism…

It’s not so much that you or your child can’t focus on two things at once
and get some good results…

It’s just I’ve found in my experience that I get a substantially better results
when I just focus on one…

However…

Where many parents and carers of autistic children go wrong is they
focus on non functional language…

And I get it, I can totally understand why parents and carers do it.
They just want their child to learn more language and speak more!
Which is great, but…

They end up focusing on language that doesn’t really make sense to
their child…

Language that may need to be taught eventually, but not language their
child will use in their current everyday life…

And again from experience, if you push to teach a child with autism non
functional language it often results in behaviour…

Then you’re back to square one.

It goes back to what I said earlier if you keep busy but focus on the wrong
things you aren’t necessarily going to get good results…

So in the future, for the best results make a list of everyday functional
language and work through teaching the phrases systematically…
