Boundaries and bonds with your autistic child

So many of my emails and blogs cover preparation for autistic children. And this is mainly because it is such an important subject and can change situations and daily life drastically.

But, today I’m going to talk about something a little bit different on the subject of preparation.

Today I’m going to talk about how preparation can specifically help form a bond between you and your child.

Over the years a lot of research has been done regarding children and expectations.

It’s been shown that every child, no matter what type of personality, behaviour or background they have, need boundaries.

And guess what…

Children with autism are no different.

When you set clear boundaries for a child you are giving them a plain choice whether to follow your expectation or face the consequences you’ve set for them. More often than not doing this alone helps manage your child’s behaviour.

But what’s all this got to do with forming a close bond with your child?

Well, because research has shown that children need to have boundaries when growing up, setting them teaches your child how they can meet your expectation.

AKA please you.

Think of it like this, if a friend asked you to bring a dish to their dinner party but gave you no indication whatsoever of what they like, what they already had or any allergies, you’re going in blind.

Whereas if your friend asked you to bring a cake dessert, it narrows it down and you know what needs to be done.

You’re more likely to ‘get it right’ and please your friend.

As is a child when you tell them how to ask for something or how to behave at a friend’s house.

And by following your expectation they are showing you that they want to please you. Thus strengthening your bond with your child.
