Working together with your child’s school

Having your child’s school on board with supporting your child’s needs is so vital in helping them progress. And one of the key ways to do this is by having good, honest and open communication with them.

And that works both ways.

You have to be open and honest with them, and they have to be open and honest with you.

If your child had a bad nights sleep or a meltdown in the morning, then it’s vital that you share this with with your child’s teacher … first thing…

Don’t wait until the end of the day when you’re finding out they’ve had a really challenging day to share this information.

That is no help whatsoever.

Speaking from experience, when I worked it schools it was SO helpful to know any information like this first thing in the morning so I could adapt things for the child and help them ease into their day.

For example, knowing a child has had a bad nights sleep or hasn’t had any breakfast gives teachers a heads up to maybe offer a mid-morning snack or take things easy by the afternoon. This is especially important for non-verbal children as they may not communication their wants/ needs and display this in behaviour instead.

A lot of parents I’ve worked with will shy away from sharing negative behaviours, lack of sleep or illness with their child’s teachers…

And in some ways I get it…

It may feel embarrassing, you may feel as though you’re being judged, you might just want to get the hell out of that playground and home to some peace and quiet.

But just sucking it up and taking 2 minutes to communicate with your child’s teacher is likely to be hugely beneficial for your child.

But what if you don’t have the time or your child’s teacher is busy in the morning?

Another great way of communicating with your child’s teachers is by having a home/school link book. You may feel more comfortable sharing information in a private link book so this is a great alternative. Any old notebook will do. Make sure you read your child’s link book when they get home so you are ‘in the loop’ of how their day went.
