Why you shouldn’t be a perfectionist with your autistic child

One of the challenges that comes up most often when speaking to parents and carers who have children with autism is simply finding the time to get things done…

You see…. For many parents and carers, it’s not the “not knowing what to do” that holds them back. It’s the “not finding the time to do it”.

But I think it goes a little deeper than that because the truth is, we all have exactly the same amount of time in the day.

Time often isn’t the real issue…

The real problem is these parents and carers can’t find the time to get things done in EXACTLY the way they think it should be done….

They’re perfectionists!… They’re striving for perfection…

And I hold my hands up, I too have been one of these people.

But the thing about perfection is… It doesn’t exist!

It’s unachievable…

And if you set your sights on trying to reach an unreachable goal, you’re going to end up failing!…

And then end up feeling rubbish about helping your child.

But on top of that… Even if perfection did exist and was achievable, it does NOT mean suddenly your child’s going to have that big breakthrough you’re dreaming of…

Taking consistent actions are a lot more likely to get you this!

The problem is, the majority of parents and carers get this the wrong way round. Rather than focusing on just getting things done and taking those consistent actions, they focus on perfection…

They focus on finding that “perfect” speech and language therapist and go months without hiring anyone…

They focus on their child being in “just the right mood” before they introduce a new routine …

They focus on it being that “perfect” time before they start working on their child’s communication targets….

And I could go on…

Let me repeat! Perfection does NOT mean your child will progress.

Apple is one of the world’s most successful and richest companies… Yet, I remember them releasing the iPhone 6 with a whole load of of imperfections including the fact that it literally bent when you put it in your pocket….

And that’s not a criticism by any means! Far from it…. If companies like Apple had waited to get things “perfect” before releasing their latest product… We’d still be waiting for their release now and they would have missed out on billions of sales….

The same applies for your child REMOVE NAME!

Perfection does NOT equal progress. Taking small but consistent actions in helping your child WILL!

Speaking of helping your child progress…

Imagine if I could help you take those small consistent actions every day which will help your child thrive…
