Thinking outside of the box for your child on the spectrum

Have you ever wanted something so bad that you’d go through almost anything to get it?

Every year thousands of people do some pretty tough stuff for charity…

Like climbing a mountain…

Shaving their head…

Sleeping on the streets…

Running a marathon…

To name a few.

These people go through blood, sweat and tears all to hit their target and raise money for their chosen charity…

When people want something enough they’ll put themselves through and do things they may not have done before.

There’s times in my life I’ve wanted something so bad that I put in the extra hours at work so I’d have enough money to finally get it.

Maybe you’ve done this too?

Well guess what…

Your autistic child is no different.

There will be things they want so bad that they’ll go to great lengths to get it. But you might just need to think outside the box.

I first realized this with a child I used to work with years ago…

He was hugely motivated by crayons and I would use them as a reward when we were working together.

He surprised me time and time again doing the most difficult tasks all to get his crayons at the end…

One day after talking to his Mum we decided to work on his fine motor skills, so that he’d eventually be able to dress and undress himself.

His Mum made a small bag and sewed on 2 large buttons…

Inside the bag I put his crayons.

I told him he just needed to open the buttons then he could draw with them straight away.

It took him a while but he did not give up. He picked away at the button hole again and again…

And eventually he hooked his small fingers around the button and…. success, he did!

For a child that had never independently undone buttons before this was a huge achievement.

And it sure felt like he’d climbed a mountain!
