Oprah Winfrey and autism

You may not have watched Orpah’s talk show, seen any over her movies or read her books but there’s no denying that Oprah Winfrey is a household name.

And like most people with her level of success, that took some hard work.

The thing is, Oprah didn’t let that hard work put her off her goal.

She experienced countless set backs… from being told she wasn’t the right “face” for tv…

Being told to lose weight…

Criticised about her bubbly personality…

Even being betrayed by family members and having her past demons thrown back at her all in the public eye.

Oprah did not change her thinking…. “I will make it…I will help thousands of people. I will keep going.”

Oprah believed that helping people was her life’s purpose and she wasn’t going to let anything stand in the way of that.

Her thinking was something pretty unique in my opinion…

Wanting to HELP others even though so many people had hurt her and let her down.

But it was this powerful way of thinking that helped her “make it” and wow did she make it?…

Emmy Awards, A Tony award, The People’s Choice awards, Awards for Outstanding Speeches, Charity Work, Tv Talk Shows…

It’s been said that Oprah has donated over $41 Million through The Oprah Winfrey Foundation, which helps those in need for education access and programs for women and children.

She made it alright!

But why am I telling you about Oprah Winfrey?…

What Oprah had was a unique way of thinking.

And children with autism also have a unique way of thinking. Especially when it comes to social interactions.

You see typical developing people have something that’s called “social thinking” and we use this when we socialise.

Many children with autism on the other hand do not have this same skill.

Which makes things like joining in with a group activity difficult…

Or sharing their things…

Taking turns…

Initiating conversation.

These are all things that involve social thinking.

So, how can we teach our children to become social thinkers?

Well, like Oprah’s success it will undoubtably take time and hard work.

It will MOST DEFINITELY not be an overnight success story.

But it sure will be worthwhile!
