Helping your autistic child achieve something big is a lot like steering a ship…

One thing that annoys me about some of the parents and carers of autistic children who approach me… are those looking for a quick fix…
And this isn’t to point fingers at anyone, because I’ve even been there myself…
So desperate for your child to achieve something you become obsessed with finding that ‘miracle cure’…
That magic solution…
Or that one thing that’s going to make everything start happening for your child overnight…
The truth is… It almost NEVER happens that way…
Don’t get me wrong…
You CAN achieve things pretty quickly if you are positive, hard working and consistent…
You CAN get very dramatic results in a very short amount of time…
It is possible to change one or two things in the way you deal with your child and see results almost instantly…
But it doesn’t always happen that way…
Very often, actions that you take today and for the rest of the week, might not create any results until 6 months from now…
Perhaps even longer…
That’s probably not what you want to hear… But it’s the truth!
(Even though some so called guru and experts will never tell you this…)
Helping your child achieve something big is a lot like steering a ship…
Remember the ‘Ice Berg’ scene in Titanic?…
Let me refresh your memory…
Two guys are stood shivering on the deck when suddenly they spot the ice berg right ahead of them…
They FREAK OUT!… They take immediate action and run to the phone to call the lieutenant Screaming “pick up!”
The lieutenant finally picks ups, they tell him the news and he freaks out too…
He then takes immediate action and runs to tell the guy actually steering the ship…
And he also freaks out!… and begins frantically turning the steering wheel like a mad man…
The whole engine room is in a state of panic… People are running doing a whole bunch of stuff but the ship doesn’t seem to be moving at all…
Meanwhile… The two guys in the crow’s nest are panicking too, screaming “Why aren’t we turning? Why aren’t we bloody turning?!!”
And then…. CRRUNNNCCHHHHHHH!!! The iceberg starts ripping into the side of the mammoth steamer ship that’s barely even turning… and the rest is history…
Remember??
Well, it can sometimes be like this when you’re working on something tough with your child.
It’s might feel like you’re, running around in the engine room doing a bunch of stuff…
But you’re not seeing results straight away…
And it might be weeks or even months before the ship starts turning!
The trick is, to start turning the ship WELL before it’s about to hit an iceberg….
