FEE-FI-FOO-FUM!

Something almost all Autistic and Asperger’s children love in life is predictableness. There’s something about predictability that makes an ASD or Asperger’s child feel adequate and “in the know” if you like.

So as their parents and careers it is key that we encourage this in their lives. One great way of doing this is by using repetitive language stories. I’m talking about the Jack and the Beanstalk’s, The Three Little Pigs and The Ginger Bread Man stories. All stories that heavily use repetitive language. For example “Fee-fi-fo-fum” in Jack and the Beanstalk.

Read these stories with your child at appropriate times, ensuring to put emphasis on the recurring parts to promote communication. E.g. “So what did the giant say..?”

If your child becomes obsessed with one particular story, that is ok, just make sure you ration that particular book. For example that can be Tuesday’s story.

If suitable after a couple of readings tell your child you’ll be taking turns in reading the story. Stop at the repetitive phrases as a clear indication that it’s their turn to finish the phrase. When they do be sure to applaud and praise them.

If you’re looking for some more up to date repetitive language stories here are a few fab examples:

Room on the Broom & Stick Man by Julia Donaldson
