Against All Odds

So in England at the moment the weather is doing crazy things. (for England) We’ve had 2 weeks of on and off beautiful sunshine and peaks of 31 degrees, which believe me ISN’T usual for England! And for the last two nights in London we’ve had huge thunder and lightening storms. I mean, the type that even the heaviest of sleepers would’ve heard.  And it’s left us with 2 days of that “muggy type” heat that makes you feel heavy, lethargic and not in the mood to do anything.

Now there is a point to this, I’m not just giving you England’s weather update!

Because of this, I’ve been re thinking the content for my sessions with my Autistic boys this week. Hot, muggy weather, long hot sleepless nights, what feels like NO fresh air around. My boys are going to be tired, grumpy and lethargic, surely my sessions were doomed right?

Well…

I couldn’t have been more wrong!

I turned up to my session yesterday after having a large double shot cappuccino (rather than my usual small) with a bag of goodies, plan b’s and distractions, ready to face whatever was in store.

What I was faced with was truly unexpected. The child greeted me and sat down with me ready to start. Confused, I looked at him, no bags under his eyes, flushed cheeks or sweaty forehead. Much unlike me!

I held my breath and continued with the session, trying to ignore my gut feeling that it would soon all come crashing down.

He continued to amaze me…

The session was nothing short of outstanding!

He got higher scores in his target work than ANY OTHER session before. He used more language than i’d ever heard him speak. He wasn’t just getting on with each task he was actually waiting for more, even when it would usually be time for a learning break!

I couldn’t believe it!

The reason I’m sharing our story with you is this…

In my opinion this child really reminded me and beautifully demonstrated just how unpredictable Autistic children can be.
Just when you think you know something for sure with an ASD child, against all the odds, they surprise you!

So just remember when things seem really tough with your ASD child, keep trying, keep positive and you will eventually see results.

Speak with you soon, until then
