It’s not going to be a walk in the park

Today I read an article about a “breakthrough treatment” designed to help reduce symptoms of autism.

As my work is directly helping families with children who have autism, I feel inclined to read articles like this to make sure I’m up to speed with the world of autism.

But really, honestly most of the time I find these articles frustrating and somewhat offensive…

And this one was no different.

It talked about a “new” treatment whereby parents or carers attend 12 therapy sessions and alongside they agree to carry out 20-30 minutes per day of structured communication and play activities with their child.

Now it doesn’t give much information about what goes on in these 12 therapy sessions in the article; it’s all quite vague…

That’s the first thing that gets on my nerves.

But secondly and more importantly…

If your child’s communication and social skills is something you desperately want to improve…

If it’s something that forms a barrier around your child and stops them from bonding with you…

If it’s something you worry about, something that gets you down and stresses you out…

If they choose not to communicate with other children and you hope for a day they can finally make friends…

Then really…. Is spending 20-30 minutes per day working on their social and communication skills through play a big ask?

Ask yourself … how much do you really want your child’s communication / social development to improve?

If you are one of these parents and carers that think “It’s all up to the school” and you choose to let your child segregate themselves, watch tv or play iPad games from 3:45 pm until bedtime each day BUT STILL expect to see results in your child…

Then please stop reading my emails right now.
